Review for Garmin Tri-Tronics PRO 550

I picked this because it was the most intuitive design in terms of easily finding the buttons when you're not looking at it. The battery life is very impressive. I've had it for about a year now, and I love it. Very happy with my purchase.

I am really liking this new pro 550 system. I upgraded from an older G2 system that also worked well but the batteries in the collars had all seen much better days. My favorite feature by far is the ability to remotely turn on the beacon or collar light. I walk my boys off leash so this is really handy at night, I can keep track of them all easily. I am also training my 3rd dog, a rescue and a major runner, she is responding beautifully to the collar and is learning recall on the tone. I'd highly recommend tri-tronics and especially the pro 550.

Absolutely love this collar. I'd like to see a trashbreaker-type collar with the same functions as the Pro 550 but with the added range/reception or an improved antennae on the handset. Some reception seems to be blocked when worn on the waist and my wrist/forearm is too close to the remote's antennae. Once I move the antennae more in line of sight of the collar, the commands are better received. Nit-picky, yes, but just a wish-list, as I knew this would more than likely happen due to the way this frequency propagates and is blocked by nearby objects (wrist/forearm/body).

A great collar. Where I grouse hunt in the mountains, it doesn't take much to lose line of sight. The extra range gives me the reach if needed. Also, I really like the adjustability in stimulation that it offers. It can do the sensitivity of the smaller collars, while being able to trash break as well if needed. I trained both dogs with the tone feature, and it works well enough that I very rarely have to actually stimulate.

I would highly recommend this e-collar. The tube style transmitter is comfortable to hold in your hand and is easy to use. The stimulation buttons are easy to locate even when in a jacket pocket. The intensity can be adjusted without looking at the transmitter and with 21 levels. It can be tweaked to your dog's temperament or for the distractions that are present. Having a tone button which is a different color is also a nice feature. The holster that comes with it has belt loops or you can use the strap that is provided. I had borrowed a co-worker's Pro 550 for a couple of weeks so I knew what it was like but I still looked at some other models/manufacturers before deciding to purchase the 550. I didn't find any other ones that seemed to be as solidly constructed. As for Gun Dog Supply, they were great to purchase from. I ordered it online and it shipped the same day, arriving three days later.

This is by far the best remote I've had. The ergonomics are spectacular. As a woman, I have a small hand, but my fingers can still reach the buttons and my thumb can turn the stimulation dial up or down and the antenna is not in the way. Which means I don't have to look at what I'm doing so my timing is more precise. My only want, would be that the receiver be a bit smaller. Other than that, excellent product!

Replaced my 15 year old TriTronics 200 LR collar. Overall I like the new PRO 550, very convenient changing intensity on the transmitter instead of having to change plugs (especially with two very different dogs). Only issue is the collar strap. There is no D ring to attach a check cord. The strap is also very flimsy and several times the strap unbuckled when I thought that I had it placed properly around the dog's neck. I'm now a bit concerned about possibly losing the collar while doing water work.

Review for Garmin PRO 550 3-dog Combo
February 21, 2016
Let me first say that I owned the Tritronic model for about 5 years prior to purchasing the updated garmin model. The Tri Tronics worked great every day for 5 years. I have 3 dogs and run them a mile or two twice a day. Therefore I do use this daily. The new model switched over to a three-quarter inch collar and the receiver slightly smaller. One of the best functions on the receiver is the extremely bright LED lights. So far have not had a malfunction with the transmitter or receiver over the past 3 months. The downside to this new model is the addition of an extra toggle switch on the transmitter. Now there are 2 tiny toggles that can be difficult to distinguish in the cold wearing gloves. The other switch is in the charging mechanism. To charge the transmitter there are 3 separate attachments to charge, and the receiver there are 2 separate attachments. The charging terminals are much smaller than the old try traumatic small. So far no issues that I foresee corrosion becoming a problem. The other thing that worries me about the transmitter is that they now have a rubber flap covering the charging port. Again so far no issues, but I am suspecting that water will one-day get into it.

I've yet to get my pup, about 4 weeks more of waiting, but, I've tested it on myself, and reviewed all the features, and I have to say this is as close to perfect for me! I do have an older tri tronics collar and remote, but this has so many more features. I should really be able to get the right stimulation without the fear of overdoing it. I love it!

I have a bullmastiff that came to us by way of a relative not being able to keep him. He is not mean but determined. He would take off on his own. Walks around the farm and beyond. The collar got his immediate attention. I put the collar on, and I seldom have to use it. He knows when I call to come now.

This is my third purchase of this collar/transmitter over the last 20 + years. This newest model has the best designed transmitter yet, and easily adds a second dog/collar when needed. The many levels of stimulation are quickly adjusted in the field without having to look at the transmitter, meaning that you never need to take your eyes off of your dog while in use. It's smaller, lighter, and easy to handle. Thanks Steve, for the super instruction video on your web site. It quickly brought me up to speed with the operation of new model.

We have had some experience with an e-collar and found it to be very effective. Now we have 3 dogs and decided to go with the Garmin PRO 550. It has been working great and our dogs respond to it very well. The switches can be a bit difficult/tricky to use, but once you understand the functionality and get used to the way it works, it is excellent!

Really like the versatility of the different levels of correction. It's super easy to use. The only drawback I see is the holster. It's a very tight fit which makes it tough to reinsert after charging. My suggestion would be to have a window in the holster where it could be charged without removing from the holster. Other than that it's perfect!

We upgraded from another model because of the flaws in the receiver. We've been using Tri-Tronics collar for over 7 years now, and we're big fans, but the old model kept breaking on the side strap holders. We really dislike the transmitter on this one. It's big and clunky, the 2 switches tend to slide when we don't want them to, and we have to charge not one, but 2 units now. The old one had a small replaceable battery that rarely had to be replaced and we found that better for our purposes. We also don't like the holder on the transmitter. The old one had a strap that allowed us to easily hang it around our necks. This one has a holster and a big clunky strap that doesn't seem to make much sense. The unit doesn't stay upright, and moves around too much. But we do like the improved strap holders on the receiver. And we love the new charging cradle, much improved over the old one!

This collar and remote are very easy to use, and I highly recommend it. you can run the remote with one hand and never have to look down at it. I like the collar lights that are operated by the remote, especially when I am training or running at night. The collar packs a punch and with the wide range of stimulation settings it makes it easy to find the perfect setting for your dog. The only down side is the remote is a little larger than my old tri-tronic model, but that really doesn't bother me. I wish they stylized 1 inch straps for the dog collar, but the 3/4 inch seems to hold up pretty well.

I mainly got it for my Kelpie that works at the ranch with me. She was over excited, and it is for her safety around the horses. After one day of basic obedience training with it I took her to the ranch. It only took a couple of corrections, and now she is working so much calmer. When I mount my horse I don't have an over excited barking nut, just a calm dog ready to work. After a couple of weeks she is obeying commands while herding from quite a distance with the tone and vibration settings. I love it, and working with her is so much calmer.

Love this! Our dog, Hatchet, is a very exuberant 1 year old who enjoys jumping on visitors. We could control him with a prong collar, but it did not seem to teach him anything. He needs exercise and was good off leash, unless something else caught his attention. I started using the Pro 550 with commands that he was already familiar with and saw an immediate improvement. I worked with him several times a day, and he is responding very well. I have not had to use a setting above 3 Medium. He is like a different dog! No excessive shocking, just steady, consistent command and response. I am now training him to recall when he hears the tone. Thank you for giving me a tool to bring out the best in my dog without years of waiting for him to mature.

I have tried 2 other brands and wasn't happy with them. So far, very happy with performance dog corrects a low setting. The 3 level of stimulation per dial setting make increasing stimulation quick if there are distractions. Controller is larger than most other brands, but actually very functionable.

This is by far the most versatile, trustworthy and reliable system I have owned. I let my dogs range at night and early in the morning. Early training required the use of a beep and a shock. The units versatility allowed me to add a beep and a vibration instead of a shock to get the response I needed. At night, the flashlight option comes in handy. Trustworthy to three quarters of a mile in a neighborhood,. An added bonus is the barking limiter. All this In one collar. Easily worth the money in the long run, especially if you want to protect your dog.

I have no complaints, and it has worked well. I used it on a daily basis to train a 1 year old Pitbull. I have not performed any long range testing as my dog never at a distance of more than 100 yards or so. If you are going to buy one of these devices you cannot go wrong with this one. It performs as advertised. Good things are rarely cheap. This is a good example.

First time E-Collar owner, and this was the only site that truly made me feel like I was making an informed decision and not just selling a product. This product was a good bit out of my price range, but after researching the alternatives it was the clear choice. My GSD pup is a great dog and listens well when the excitement level isn't too high. I did basic obedience training with a prong collar, but no amount of humane corrections worked when she gets really worked up. With this collar I can get her attention easily and never have to go over level 3. Having tried these levels on myself, I believe this is much more humane than jerking a chain to the point of whiplash and more effective. The selling points on this system for me was the completely sealed collar with no rubber boot, the no look operation, and the range. The only things on my wishlist would be to have simultaneous bark and training modes like some other collars, and have the remote be a bit smaller. Lastly, the documentation that comes with the unit is lacking and not very intuitive. By no means a deal breaker, but it would be nice to have some more verbose explanation of functions. Thank you for the great resources and products you provide here. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
