Works great

I’ve been trialing bird dogs for over 30 years and I finally bought the much needed GPS. It’s just to dangerous out there now and with my big runners I like the security of knowing where they are.
I’ve used it a few times now and it’s easy to use.

I've owned birddogs for a long time and I lost a dog a couple of years ago. I should have purchased a tracking collar much sooner. I asked a friend who has been working and training birddogs for a long time and he recommended that I look at the Garmin ASTRO 430 and also recommended that I consider Gun Dog Supply. I did both and am glad I did. I'm still learning all of the features but it has worked great right out of the box.

I buy all of pointing dog equipment from Gun Dog supply. They own and understand pointing dogs, have a good line of products, get the shipments out quickly and completely guarantee their products no questions asked. I particularly like the YouTube videos Steve puts out regarding features of products and how to set them up properly. It makes everything much easier rather than having to search through all the manuals. Overall, one of the best companies I deal with on any product line.

Great collar with super fast tracking capabilities. You MUST have rechargeable batteries for the handheld controller and ALWAYS carry and extra set when doing long all day hunts. It will burn through them. Small price to pay for the most accurate/fastest tracking collar manufactured. Highly recommend

Excellent
Great for an Aging Dog
October 1, 2022
My 12 year old English Springer Spaniel, losing his hearing, has lately not been able to hear my calls or whistles. When we became separated this summer while trout fishing, it became apparent that measures were necessary, especially with the upcoming pa’tridge season. I called Gun Dog Supply, spoke with Steve, explained the situation, and he recommended this product. It has surpassed my expectations, and I am well pleased.

Just what I was looking for
September 16, 2022
There are lots of options when looking for an electronic sporting dog collar. I always start an inquiry like this one at Gun Dog Supply. Excellent review of the capabilities of this combination which was exactly what I was thinking about. I needed a gps location collar for hunting grouse in hilly, heavy cover with a young, still too rangey shorthair. She has always responded to my whistle, but this will give me some peace of mind hunting new territory. Everything about the search, transaction, directions for use, and fulfillment of the order was top notch. A great product and process.
Pros
- A great tool for single or multiple dog tracking. Intuitive, durable, does what I need
Cons
- None really, the dog adapts to the new device and antenna quickly
Great GPS Tracker
April 2, 2022
Both the handheld and the tracking collar work great and are easy to use. Easily keep track of my dog. I would recommend considering getting the rechargeable batteries for it. Otherwise you might be going through a lot of AA batteries if you’re using it on daily basis. If you use only occasionally that might not be an issue.
Pros
- Works really well, easy to use, and robust.
Cons
- No real cons I've experienced.

Astro 430 w/T5 combo

Took me a bit to buy this for my two pointers but once I did, I wish I had years ago. Super easy to set up and have used it several times with my dogs prior to this hunting season. I highly recommend getting this product
Replacement/Upgrade
August 12, 2021
After 12yrs replacing an older Garmin unit that was still working fine I took the plunge and bought the 430 long range combo. Navigating the new handheld unit is a little different but not completely unfamiliar. That's nice not having to learn a completely new rig. The dog collar has a much longer antenna that hopefully will lead to better communication with the handheld unit when line of sight is lost. The long range gear is a bit redundant I found, as the Garmin came with a longer range rubber duck antenna for the handheld unit so the extra one in the long range kit is essentially a duplicate but of different construction so made it'll perform better? However, I bought the long range kit for the roof mount antenna so that's fairly inconsequential. Early short range trials as one would expect, very good. Won't get long range results till Fall in the field.
Pros
- Familiar operating system. Prefer Garmin setups to others I've tried for actual in field rough use.
Cons
- New system requires extra step to mark truck where the old system made it part of starting a new hunt.
Garmin Astro 430
April 5, 2021
Well i had problems locating my 10 month old english pointer so I purchased the Garmin Astro 430. When it came in the mail i got it out and went to my office to figure it out. I wanted to set it up on my computer first and became discouraged when i seen how technical it was. i packed to up to return that day. Then i decided to try it on the dog before i returned it. When i let the dog out of his box. he took off and i quickly realized how effective the garmin tracker really is. Within 20 minutes the handheld beeped and read that FESTUS was on point 40 yards away. Festus was on point and flused a covey of quail right over my head. IT WORKS. It would have been a mistake to return or exchange it because off it accuracy, quality and capability. Definitely worth $650 in my opinion. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! STEVE SNELL DEFINITLY KNOWS THE BEST DOG TRACKERS OUT THERE!!! THANKS STEVE!!

Pros
- ACCURATLY LOCATED MY DOG
- TOLD ME WHEN MY DOG WAS ON POINT
- BASECAMP SHOWS WHERE AND HOW FAR MY DOG TRAVELED
- TOO MANY PROS TO LIST
Cons
- WISH GARMIN WOULD HAVE INCLUEDED A LANYARD AND CAR MOUNT FOR THE HAND HELD
A homer in for Garmin
January 11, 2021
I bought the Astro 430/t5 for my German Shorthair and it has worked great for upland hunting. We went to South Dakota with several friends and it was great to be able to see my dog working in front of all of us. In many of the convenience stores, bars, and hotels were posters of lost dogs. With up to a 9 mile range, I was never concerned about where my dog was.
Pros
- Alerts when dog was on point. Todo map was great for looking over new hunting area. Compass gave instant direction and distance to dog.
Cons
- The only reason for 4 stars is because the receiver is not rechargeable but uses AA batteries unlike my other Garmin products that are rechargeable. Better carry extra batteries.

Grate product, works Excellent and fast shipment.
OK But Poor Instructions
December 25, 2020
I can keep up with my dog just fine with it, but there are so many different screens and so many different ways to get to each screen that it is over-complicated. It doesn't come with an owner's manual, just a quick start guide that leaves much to be desired. The owner's manual doesn't read much easier. You can download the owner's manual but looks like for the price Garmin charges they could at least include the complete instructions. Overall, the product works fine but the support materials are poorly conceived and written, and I'm a technical person.

Incredible Product and the best site to purchase high dollar devices
October 9, 2020
Gun Dog Supply is the only place to purchase these high dollar, no discount/coupon items.
When Garmin quoted a 5-8 week turnaround Gun Dog Supply literally shipped the same day. I find that astounding that the actual manufacturer does not keep their items in stock. Gun Dog Supply is the only place I will shop for my dog related items.
Pros
- Fast shipping, great video descriptors that help to select the exact model and item I needed
Cons
- Bark detect does not work. I've asked my 5 teammates who have this same device if they ever got it to work and the answer was no. Garmin adds a disclaimer that "it does not work in all areas" so I guess the end result is, it doesn't work anywhere.

Works great in Southern Mexico
September 11, 2020
Was not sure if the product would work in Southern Mexico due to the region and hot and humid weather, however It performed great no issues at all. Easy to set up and change settings language to spanish. Used on several Deer hunts in Southern Mexico where it is very humid and hot and these units performed very well. Thankyou everyone at Gun Dog Supply, customer service is great and staff is friendly, professional and very knowledgeable on the products they provide to their customers, I highly recommend them to any one who uses hunting dogs here in USA or in Mexico.
Pros
- easy to program, friendly and professional staff
Cons
- no complaints, great product, great company, family owned business who provides excellent personalized service to their customers

Love this product
September 3, 2020
This is great product if you have a big running dog or hunt/ train with thick cover around. Fast updates on dog location and lots of great features most I’ll never probably use but they are available.
Extremely long battery life on the collar have used it for 1 month+ and haven’t had to recharge it yet. Use good AA batteries in the controller though or you will end up changing them every couple of weeks.
Pros
- Fast updates
- Long range
- Ease of use
- Sturdy clip
- Collar has great battery life
- Nice mapping features
Cons
- Uses cheap AA up fast
- Even though you can choose the type of dog ( pointer in my case ) it will still say your dog has treed an animal sometimes.
- Compass can be a little finicky and you will need to recalibrate it from time to time.

I like the system, but would have liked it a lot better if you could track other hunters in the club that have ASTRO 320 systems with DC 40,50 collars. Knowing what I know now would have just ordered new T-5 collars instead of ASTRO 430 system. Still like what I have in the 430 because it seems to track better and farther than ASTRO 320. Thanks, A.S. King

I really like my Garmin Astro GPS but I am having a little trouble learning how to read the screen when you have 2 mountains with valleys in the middle. How do I know exactly how to read and find the exact location of the dogs and the easiest route to take? Is there a book besides what came with the system? I can find the dogs but deciding which route and quickest way is my problem. The overall system is GREAT and I would recommend it to any hunter!!!!

I love the Garmin 430. I made the mistake of not getting the trainer combo unit; that would work much better for me. I recommend spending the extra $150 and get the trainer combo. Great Product and great help from GunDogSupply!
Easy to use and it is awesome to know where my dog is at all times
October 12, 2016
I really love the peace of mind the Garmin Astro 430 gives me while hunting. I mainly hunt Grouse and Woodcock so we are usually in heavy cover. I have always hunted with a bell and would have the difficult task of finding my dog when she went on point. I have had her 5 yards away and could't find her. With the Astro I always know exactly where she is.
The on point notification is awesome. The dog direction and distance screen leads me right to my dog. I know when I am getting close so I can start looking for my dog and also try to look for possible openings for shooting The only draw back I see so far is that the battery system for the hand held could be better.
Over all it is easy to use and it is awesome to know where my dog is at all times no matter if she is on the move or on point. Thick cover doesn't seem to be a problem. I would recommend this to anyone who likes to hit the woods with a dog.

The 430 works great if that is the only device you are using. I tried running both the 430 and 320 together and ran into some issues with it. If we just talk about the 430 then performance is great, but I'm sure there are a lot of hunters out there like myself that need to know about the issues when trying to run both handheld units together.

Kevin
Review for Garmin Astro 430 T5 Mini Combo
July 21, 2016
This collar has been a huge relief. I no longer have to wonder what part of the yard the dogs are in or if they have gotten out and are wondering. Even deep in the wooded lots I still have signal. Absolutely worth the money. I would buy another in a heartbeat!
She likes to run so the Astro 320/T5 lets me keep track of her incase she sees a deer and hightails it away from me. I also keep a bell on her collar. I feel pretty good that I'll know where to find her.
I wish a company like Garmin could figure out how to incorporate a shorter antenna for the T5. It is a real problem being so long.

It would be great if/when Garmin combines their Rino GPS radio with their gps e/training collar.
320 had to be calibrated a lot when used in the valleys. Somehow the compass would point in the wrong directions. Calibrated about 6 times in a hunt. The batteries in the 320 don't last as long as the 220. The extra features are a plus, and the T5 collars are great.
This is a fantastic system once coupled with the Birds eye sat maps and southeast topo map. Word to the wise, buy the maps either on a CD or preloaded SD card. I was unable to get them via download.
Like Astro 220 and 40 DC collars better.
My dogs sometimes wander, and I live in the country. With the Astro 320 you can keep tabs on disappearing dogs and locate them quickly. Seems to work well so far. If you want to keep track of your dogs and don't want to spend all day looking for them, then I recommend the Astro 320.
It's great. I'm able to keep track of my dog when he out of eyesight. It's a peace of mind. While doing a Hunt Test, my boy went around a bend, and he was out of sight for a few seconds. I just looked at my Astro 320 and knew he was 60 yards out on Point.

Gus will be used for tracking wounded deer. It's out of season now, so have just used it around the house. Seems to work very well, especially with the Birdseye satellite images, which was easy to download on the handheld.
I'm still learning about it, but it worked great. She jumped a deer, and it was awesome to know where she was. She went 3/4 mile from me before turning back. It still worries me, but it tracked her perfect, and I could head in the correct direction to get her back. It was a relief to see the yardage getting closer as she worked her way back to my yelling for her, and then to see her track and everywhere she went. I put two bells on the coller so deer can hear her coming and leave before she sees them (I hope). First time ever tracking her it was worth the money to me just to know where she was, and I could go get her if I had to.
